Salomon Speedcross 3 Running Shoes

5th Mar 2013

Salomon Speedcross 3

A while back I reviewed a pair of Salomon Fellcross running shoes. I complained in the review that the tread was not very good on wet rock. The guys at Salomon suggested I try a pair of Speedcross instead. The shoe is very similar to the Fellcross, with a more aggressive tread – i.e. more and bigger rubber spikes. They are indeed less slippery on wet rock, but the rubber compound is, as far as I can make out, the same so there is still a bit of an issue with slipping. To be fair, as I pointed out in the original review of the Fellcross, I’ve yet to come across a shoe that doesn’t slip on wet rock to some degree, and the Speedcross is definitely an improvement on the Fellcross. I LOVE the quicklace system with the little pocket on the tongue to tuck the lace into when running. If you forget your gloves and get back in from a winter run with numb hands it’s easy to get the shoes off; I’ve never had to stop mid run or mid race to re-tie a shoelace when wearing either model, and think that all shoe manufacturers could learn a thing or two about them (they’d also make great triathlon laces for quick transitioning). Comfort wise they are a good deal higher off the ground than the Fellcross but I’ve not felt at all unstable in them – and this coming from somebody with inherently weak ankles. Another feature I particularly like is the neoprene-like cover above the tongue which genuinely keeps your feet dry in wet conditions.

An all-round great fell running shoe.
