Tent: T2 Ultralight Pro Hiking Tent - Quechua (Decathlon)

8th Sep 2009

As the name suggests, this is a tent aimed at those wishing to save weight whilst camping, whether you plan to hike with your tent or, as is so often the case in this day and age – if your baggage allowance is severely limited by guidelines of budget airlines.

Quechua T2 Tent

Weighing just 2 kilos, and packing down pretty small (approx 35 x 15 x 15cm), Quecha have produced a great little tent which would be sufficient for most camping situations. The tent does remain erect without its guy lines fastened, and it only has three lines so it would be unlikely to stand up to strong winds. During our two weeks trip to the alpine region of the Dolomites in Italy we didn’t experience any particularly strong winds, but the tent performed admirably in the several heavy thunder storms remaining completely dry inside.

The first time we pitched the tent it took a couple of minutes longer than subsequent attempts, but still took little more than five minutes to erect. The inner tent is already pre-assembled and is attached to the outer fly sheet, and there are only two poles which makes it quick and simple to put up and take down; as well as keeping the inner tent dry should you need to erect it whilst raining. There is a useful detailed photo sequence inside the tent bag, illustrating how to pitch the tent.

Whilst it may not be as spacious as the average two man tent it is perfectly adequate, although it could be a bit of a squeeze for two large people. The width at the head and shoulders end is 130cm, but this reduces to just 85cms for the feet. This meant that our sleeping bags were pressed up against the sides of the tent, causing some condensation dampness. At 220cm long, there was plenty of room lengthways.

There are just two pockets at the head end of the tent, but the porch area is 60 x 130cm so can cover two fairly big rucksacks. There are two patches of mesh fabric above the main door and there is an area of mesh at the feet end, meaning the tent stays well ventilated, keeping condensation to a minimum.

For those looking for a simple yet well designed lightweight tent, for backpacking or otherwise then the T2 ultralight is highly recommendable, and at just £59.95 it has an attractive price-point.
