‘SOUTH AMERICAN SPECIAL’ A LECTURE AND SLIDE PRESENTATION BY SIMON YATES
Simon has made nine climbing visits to South America. Indeed, his first visit to mountains outside of Europe was to attempt the first ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande in Peru. The climb and the epic descent from the mountain with Joe Simpson were etched into mountaineering folklore by Simpson’s best-selling book ‘Touching the Void’. Since then Simon has made two visits to Patagonia to climb on the granite towers of the Paine and Fitzroy regions, returned to the Cordillera Huayhuash to attempt Siula Grande’s neighbour - Siula Chico, climbed Aconcagua (6960m) and sailed in the far south on two occasions to climb in Tierra del Fuego. From the equatorial mountains of Peru, to the rarely visited peaks of Tierra del Fuego in the far south, follow Simon as he tackles the dazzling pyramids of fluted snow that form the Cordillera Huayhuash, the wind-blasted rock towers of Patagonia, joining the tourist crowd to climb the continents highest peak, before finishing by visiting one of the worlds most remote and rarely visited mountain ranges – the Cordillera Darwin. In
his unique and understated style Simon will take a humorous and philosophical
look at his mountaineering in South American, accompanied by magical mountain
images collected on his travels.
