Simon Yates

‘KARAKORAM SPECIAL’

AN ILLUSTRATED LECTURE

BY SIMON YATES

Simon has returned ten times to the Pakistani Karakoram and spent more than two years of his life in this wild and remote mountain region since his first visit in 1986. During this time he has visited many different areas, explored numerous valleys and glaciers and climbed a number of peaks in the purest Alpine Style. These have included first ascents of Leyla Peak (6300m) and Nemeka (6400m) in the Hushe Valley, various 6000m peaks on the Hispar glacier, a second ascent of Lobsang 2 on the Baltoro Glacier and the rather rudely named rock spire ‘The Dogs Knob’ on the Characousa Glacier. He has also climbed and explored in more remote areas such as the Choktoi and the Nobande Sobande glaciers and made a winter attempt on Nanga Parbat (8125m) – the world’s eighth highest mountain.

In this lecture Simon offers an inspirational overview of this stunning mountain range and the wonderful hardy people inhabiting them, presents a truly unique set of slides and offers pointers for those looking for new mountaineering objectives.
