In a Nutshell
Through
his highly successful BBC2 television programmes, Wilderness Walks, and
his editorship of tgo (The Great Outdoors) magazine Cameron McNeish, broadcaster,
lecturer, backpacker and mountaineer, has long been recognised as one
of Britain's best known outdoor commentators.
Cameron
is also an experienced radio and television journalist and presenter.
He presented the weekly magazine programme, Leisure Trail for BBC Radio
Scotland from 1985 to 1986, following that by presenting Weekend Break
and Winter Break between 1986 and 1989. Reflecting his growing interest
in wider countryside issues he became presenter of the BBC Radio Scotland
environmental programme, In the Country between 1987 and 1991. He also
wrote and presented two 6-part series called Tales of the Hills that were
broadcast in 1987. In 1991, the centenary of the publication of Munro's
Tables, he wrote and presented a programme for Radio 4 called The Munro
Challenge.
In
1994 Cameron first collaborated with Richard Else of Triple Echo Productions
to present the BBC2 television series, The Edge: One Hundred years of
Scottish Mountaineering, which went on to win a Scottish BAFTA award.
Also in 1994 Cameron presented a 6-part series called The Great Outdoors
for Channel 4 and in 1997 he presented Wilderness Walks, a 6-part series
for BBC2. In October 1998 the second series of Wilderness Walks was broadcast
on BBC2.
An
enthusiastic world traveller, Cameron has hiked, backpacked, skied and
climbed in the Alps, the Pyrenees, Spain, Iceland, North America, Norway,
Sweden, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Central America, Slovenia, Russia and
Guatemala.
Cameron
is well known as a lecturer and after dinner speaker and regularly takes
part in business seminars giving motivational talks on the re-creational
benefits of countryside and wilderness. These talks include advice on
isolation, stress relief, creating a personal haven and the necessity
of scheduling quality time for planning, visualisation and self-improvement.
His
talks are described below:

A
Wilderness Walk with John Muir
A
90-minute digital AV presentation that considers the philosophy
and prophetic vision of John Muir who emigrated from Scotland
to the USA at a young age and went on to become one of the world's
greatest ecologists.
Cameron’s
presentation is a blend of "philosophic contemplation, naturalistic
descriptions, environmental pleas, idealistic speculations and
feisty argument" - all in the context of a 220-mile backpacking
journey through the Sierra Nevada mountains of California - Muir's
"Range of Light”
- Media Review
“I
only got along to one lecture at this year’s Kendal Mountain
Film Festival but what a lecture! Cameron McNeish gave a rather
excellent presentation on the life of and philosophy of wilderness
pioneer John Muir that was set against the background of two walks
along the John Muir Trail. Cameron has always been an excellent
raconteur and this presentation certainly didn’t disappoint.
The mixture of history, views, anecdotes of time on the trail
and the stunning photography of what Muir himself called “The
Range of Light” was spot on, as was Cameron’s closing
comment/challenge to the audience “Do something for wildness
and make the mountains glad.”

| Wilderness
Walks - Behind The Cameras
A
look behind the scenes of the making of BBC 2's successful series
- Wilderness Walks. With producer/director Richard Else Cameron
takes the audience through the nitty gritty of filming an outdoor
series for television. In this presentation we go behind the scenes
in Skye with Donnie Munro, we set out on a pilgrimage in Ireland
with Jim Perrin, visit the Pyrenees with Nick Crane, climb a remote
mountain in the High Atlas of Morocco with Hamish Brown, wander
the coast of the north-west highlands with Rebecca Ridgeway and
hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail in the US with lightweight
backpacking gurus Ray and Jenny Jardine.

Mountains
- Earth's Enduring Monuments
A
considered look at some mountain areas of the world including
the Himalaya, the Pacific North West, the Sierra Nevada of California,
the Julian Alps of Slovenia and the hills of the UK. Cameron investigates
the question of our relationship with the land as recreational
users and suggests there is much we can learn from the wilderness
that can be of immense benefit in our urban environment. This
presentation is a personal appraisal of several mountain expeditions
but at the same time it is both a celebration of mountains and
a heartfelt plea for their future protection.

| Guatemala’s
Magnificent Seven - Volcano-bagging in Central America
The
Central American country of Guatemala boasts some 33 volcanoes,
several of which are still active. Last year Cameron led a trip
to this fascinating country and tackled 7 of those volcanoes.
Most of the ascents involved long climbs through bamboo and cloud
forest and on the live volcanoes the threat of sulphur fumes and
showers of lava and rock were very real. But almost as fascinating
as the volcanoes was the varied landscape and culture of Guatemala
itself and the fascinating Spanish colonial town of Antigua, a
World Heritage Site. This bohemian town is surrounded by massive
volcanoes including Volcan Agua, a volcano that has severely disrupted
the town several times in its history.

Wild
Scotland - A Spirit of Place
In
this presentation Cameron self-indulgently concentrates on those
areas that have formed the bedrock of his outdoors career, the
hill and mountains of the Scottish highlands and islands. Now
that Scotland can boast some of the finest access legislation
in Scotland, Cameron discusses the opportunities that are available
for climbers, hill-walkers, Munro-baggers and backpackers, but
his underlying theme is one of protection and conservation and
why it is the responsibility of outdoor folk to care for these
wild places.
“If
hill-walkers and climbers aren’t friends of the earth, then
God help us all…”
