Those Himalayas of the mind are not so easily possessed, there's more than precipice and storm between you and your Everest." Tennyson Introduction – Mount Everest ‘04 Barry Roberts, 42, fulfilled a teenage dream by climbing Mount Everest 8848m on May 24th 2004. Three weeks before departing for the expedition, Barry was crippled after he broke his back in 2 places from a skiing fall. Within two weeks he was back training against medical advice and undeterred in joining the expedition. Two months later, feeling ill and poorly acclimatised to the rarified air at high altitude, Barry astonished himself - and his team mates - by making a speedy recovery and ascent of the mountain over a 6 day period, first by climbing from camp 1 to camp 3 in a day and then reaching the summit from camp 4 (8300m) at 7.40am on May 24th in just 6 hours and 10 minutes, knocking a few hours off the fastest time in his team. The team’s phenomenal success was marred by the deaths of six climbers that same week which brought the dangers in the so-called "death zone" above 8,000m into sharp relief. The day after summiting, Barry guided one-armed Australian climber Paul Hockey down the mountain safely to Advanced Base Camp (6400m) after Paul was abandoned, exhausted, at 7000m after his summit attempt. Some Background Prior to Everest, Barry has participated in or led 19 world-wide expeditions which he draws on to set the scene for the illustrated story of his Everest success which has broad public and corporate appeal. Barry is a UK Sponsored Athlete with The North Face, the world’s premier outdoor clothing and equipment brand. He is a dual British/Canadian national and was educated in Canada at various universities. Barry is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and he holds the British Psychological Society’s Level B qualification in personality assessment and is an advocate of Reversal Theory, the most radical motivation theory of our time. He lives between England and Chamonix, France with his wife Eadaoin Hutchinson. Presentation Outline - An Everest Journey - an inspirational encounter with Barry Roberts Spanning 25 years of adventures across 4 continents and 20 expeditions, An Everest Journey is Barry Roberts' story of achieving a dream of climbing Mount Everest. Barry's perspective on his travels is flavoured by the many roles he's undertaken on diverse expedition projects as a leader, geographer, builder, climber, diver, management consultant and medic. His expedition career culminated recently when he summited Mount Everest up the North Ridge from Tibet on May 24th 2004. In this same week, 6 climbers from other teams perished in the death zone above 8000m whilst Barry's team put 33 climbers and Sherpas on the top. He talks candidly about life and death in the mountains, successes, failures and near misses. Emotive, informative and honest, Barry's lecture is illustrated by stunning images and video images taken on the roof of the world. Described as an explorer, entrepreneur and a gifted communicator, Barry’s experiences provide powerful metaphors related to the complexities and human dynamics of the global corporate environment. North Face Feedback & Testimonials – references on request Thanks
for the excellent inspirational Everest lecture you presented. The message
you gave, the passion you gave it with and of course the excellent photographs
ensured we saw something that will be long remembered by the staff at
Barry Callebaut in the UK. Well
done! Your inspirational lecture has gone down exceptionally well. I liked
the balance of the rational and emotional – not many “rufty-tufty”
executives can admit to having an emotional component to their make-up,
but if you can show yours, it gives them a little bit of permission to
admit their own! I genuinely think that sense of roundedness helps enormously.
Many
thanks for the two lectures given in Bristol and Exeter. You provided
a great evening’s entertainment for customers and staff. I am sure
that many who attended were inspired to undertake a bold adventure or
indeed were given a kick start to drive their dreams. The response far
exceeded my expectations having a sell out at both venues with a great
buzz after each lecture with people keen to talk with you. “Thank
you for a very inspirational, fascinating talk. Very thought provoking
in many, many ways….” To arrange for Barry to give a lecture Contact Heason Events
