We were very pleased with Alastair's talk. The students and staff very much enjoyed it, and his theme and his video clips fitted extremely well with our humanities specialist status, especially our focus on geography. It was also great for students to gain some idea of an environemnt so unlike their own in East Anglia. He brought all his own equipement which was helpful as it made the presentation very effective. He is a very warm and friendly chap, and everyone who talked to him took to him. I am very grateful to you for suggesting Alastair, and the organisational arrangements all went smoothly. Susan Richards, Newmarket College 'Congratulations on a fantastic show you are a very polished performer with great material, a good sense of fun and you know your audience, and the audience knows you. 'Storms of Laughter' was very professionally executed.' Alastair Stewart, Director, Dundee Mountain Film Festival So you're winding you're way down the mean streets of Dublin looking for a little action when the sound of a back-beat snaking its way along the street lures you inside the big old hotel and up the stairs to the upper room where the usual suspects (quite a lot more than usual this time as it happens) have gathered for their regular fortnightly dose of armchair mountaineering. But it's never been like this before. Inside Alastair Lee sits hunched over a drum-kit with a manic glint in his eye as he teases and seduces the audience with a mixture of stunning slides, practical gags, sharp observations and some good old fashioned - - BOOGIE! - - Leaping from behind the drum-kit he prowls the front of the auditorium while he takes the audience (and takes no prisoners) on a tour of the climbing world and the Gospel according to Alastair. The images dance across the three screens while the ring-master directs the show. The pace never flags as you're whisked around the world in a whistle-stop celebration of all that is good about climbing. Not to mention chaos theory. Icons are clasped and sacred cows milked for all they're worth. But make no mistake. Behind all the showmanship lies a tight, lovingly prepared, well-delivered slide-show to rank with the best. If you want a blow-by-blow worthy account of what we did on our expedition by some dinosaur of the climbing world, you're in the wrong place kid! If you want to be royally entertained then step right up. Ladies and Gentlemen, Give it up for the all-talking, all-drumming Alastair Lee! It's more than rock 'n' roll and you'll like it.. Declan O'Keeffe Take Alan Hinkes and Dame Edna Everage, place in a cocktail blender, sprinkle in some cunning stunts, serve with lashes of beautiful images and a roll - a drum roll, that is - on the side. Canadian Chaos is a welcome change to the average slide show - no tales of derring do above 8000m, no E9 ohmigod I'm about to die drama. Just a great impression of a normal fun climbing holiday told by a slightly less than normal climber who drinks life by the gallon. Andy Perkins "I fell off my chair laughing!" - David Berry, BBC 2 Producer. "Brilliant! Deserves a wider audience." - Venue Magazine, Bristol. "Superb photography. Unusual presentation. Excellent!" - Mike Mortimer, President of the Alpine Club of Canada. "I've seen the future and it plays the drums!" - Ad 2000, London Olympia. "The most diverse 'mountaineering slide-show' I've ever come across." - Brian Hall, Director Kendal Mountain Film Festival. "Fantastic photos, great humour, evocative and very entertaining. Well done." - Terry Richardson, Upcountry Tours. "Put a lot of work into show. Very Amusing." - London Mountaineering Club. "Very Talented young man - artistic, articulate, the show was refreshingly original." - National Adventure Sports Weekender, Global Entertainment Ltd. "The best slide show I've ever seen! Not that slide show justifies this performance." - Most people who've been. "Wonderful slides, totally original humour and an excellent drummer!" - Hallam University Outdoor Pursuits Club, Sheffield. "oo he's got lovely hair!" - Alastair's girlfriend! We have been delighted to welcome Alastair Lee to Whitgift School as part of our programme of visiting speakers for the Sixth Form. His talk "Canadian Chaos" (he has others in his armoury) is perfect for the hard-to-please pupil; breathtaking photography of impressive mountaineering feats, clever special effects, amusing but highly informative narrative all combine to make a hugely entertaining presentation. Alastair has clearly put a lot of thought into his show (for that is what it is so much more than just a talk with a few slides), and there are certainly some original elements, such as the fact that he uses three slide screens simultaneously and that he pauses on occasion to play the drums to recreate atmosphere or to illustrate people's characters. He finishes with a long (and you will wish it were longer) barrage of wonderful photographs set to music, a mesmerising conclusion to a marvellous performance. Do contact him if you have a free slot, you will not regret that you did. He is wonderfully contactable, making history at Whitgift as the first speaker taken on entirely through e-mail (he is on the end of a phone as well!). Take time to visit his website too. it is an excellent foretaste of the pride Alastair takes in presentation and of the level of photography you can expect during his talk. Alastair is at the top of our "re-invite" list for the coming academic year. We were the first school show he had done, but it is an experience which seems tailor-made for the school speaker circuit. He brings all of his own specialist equipment (including drum kit!), sets it all up himself, and is certainly in the real word in terms of cost, very much the organising teacher's dream! I cannot recommend him to you highly enough. Bill Penty "Alastair Lee has been a regular speaker at our Sixth Form General Studies sessions over the past few years. His presentations 'Made in China' and 'Canadian Chaos' have both gone down extremely well with our students; he tells the tales of his travels with wit and vivacity, and they are superbly illustrated with a multi-media display which includes photography, video footage - and drumming! His photography is deeply impressive and gives a wonderful sense of the terrains he has explored. Alastair is extremely accommodating, dependable and professional; he can be relied upon to give a first class presentation. I would unhesitatingly recommend him to any school." James Cannon, Head of Visiting Speakers, Whitgift School, Croydon, Surrey. - Letters from Staff and Pupils It was brilliant and greatly enjoyed. We loved the drumming!!! Your photography is quite spellbinding and it was wonderfully refreshing to be encouraged to visit such an amazing country. Sally Tomlinson, Holly Trinity College. Thanks once again to you for a really entertaining lecture. The girls loved it. So did the staff for that matter! Miss Wendy Laid, Sherborne School for Girls. Many many thanks for a wonderfully inspiring and captivating talk/show. The children were spellbound (not bad for 8-13yr olds) with the stimulating use of video footage, still photography, recorded and live music. Come back again. Matt Mockridge, Deputy Headmaster, Cumnor House School, Prep in Sussex. Firstly can I congratulate you on a superb show at King's School on the 20th of last month. I would just like to say thank you and well done for an amazing talk on your travels of China. I'm a student at the Bishop's Stortford College and it was by far one of the best lectures we have had. Kate Ailey, pupil, Bishop’s Stortford College. Memories of your splendid presentation to the school are still vivid. Peter de Voil, Headmaster, Frensham Heights. We've been having some very positive feedback from your audience. You're different - refreshingly so - from the usual run-of-the-mill, mountaineering lecture - Robin Ashcroft, Rheged We
