Winter Lectures 2005 /06

Once again Heason Events has arranged an exciting line up of multimedia evenings to liven up the dark Sheffield winter evenings. Unless otherwise stated each event will feature a short audio visual presentation or video, a 20 minute support lecture, a one hour live performance by a very well known climber or mountaineer and a raffle during the half time break. There is a bar.

Disclaimer: Please take note that lectures at the Lescar are often very busy. As there is limited seating please arrive early or be prepared to stand at the back or sit on the floor at the front. John Beatty described the series as 'Grass Roots Stuff', and that's what it is. These are lectures by climbers for climbers. If you aren't prepared to be cosy then you may be disappointed.

Exclusive for Heason Events:

E11 - 10 minutes

This short edit from Hot Aches' forthcoming 'E11' movie and DVD shows Dave MacLeod's attempts to climb Rhapsody E11 7a in the autumn of 2005. Not for the squeamish, we see him take a series of terrifying, massive, gut wrenching falls. The psychological strain shows, yet doggedly, even obsessively he keeps returning to his 'ultimate project'.

Set In Stone - Profile of a Lakeland Climber - 10 minutes

Alastair Lee of Posing Productions (Storms: The Move, Twice Upon A Time in Bolivia) brings us a 10 minute edit of his latest film, a 40 minute portrait of Dave Birkett, one of the UK's best trad climbers.

Both films will be shown in full at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival in November.

Main:

Andy Cave - Learning To Breathe (1-1.25hrs)

For 20 years Andy Cave has been exploring remote mountain ranges of the world, establishing desperate new routes. Andy was recently voted one of the top three all round climbers in Britain. He is an experienced public speaker and has a PhD in linguistics.

Learning to Breathe his recently published book - which won The Boardman Tasker Prize and the Banff Adventure Travel Writing Award 2005 - charts his life from Yorkshire coal miner to Himalayan explorer. Using stunning images Andy’s lecture is dramatic and inspiring.

A few words about the book:

CLIMBER - "...well crafted and compelling"

SUNDAY BUSINESS POST, DUBLIN - "...a tremendous piece of work, not
just because it describes the process of climbing mountains, but what
that process does to a person"

MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS - "engrossing, poignant and at times
chilling...like his climbing achievements, this book is bold and admirable"

YORKSHIRE EVENING POST - "...an extraordinary journey, and it is recalled in compelling fashion"

The series as a whole is sponsored by:
